The municipality said on Sunday that it has stepped up its campaigns to make the city free of neglected vehicles.
The Abu Dhabi Municipality has issued fresh warnings against motorists abandoning their cars on roadsides, parking areas and other public places for multiple weeks. The warning followed after hundreds of vehicles were taken off the streets every year after being found dirty or abandoned.
The municipality said on Sunday that it has stepped up its campaigns to make the city free of neglected vehicles. Officials said that leaving cars parked on the streets for an extended period make them covered with dust, which distort the city's appearance in addition to polluting the environment.
"Many vehicles are being impounded because they appear to be abandoned at parking areas, roadsides or areas without "enclosures or fences," especially in Musaffah, Mafraq and other areas. A fine of Dh3,000 will be issued to owners of impounded abandoned cars on their return."
Unwashed cars will also be subjected to towing, an offence the municipality called "an irresponsible flouting of the community rights", they added.
The revised executive regulation provides for affixing offence notices on the violating vehicles for three days instead of 14. Upon the lapse of the period without the vehicle being removed, the municipality will tow them away to the impounding yard at Al Wathba so they don't become a source of public nuisance. The law applies to all vehicles, trailers, boats and the likes.
The municipality has warned that drivers must keep their cars clean, including if they are on holiday or risk being caught up in the crackdown.
"The municipality is calling upon all community members to keep their vehicles clean to avoid the fine of Dh3,000 as stipulated by the law," said a municipal statement. "If the offender reports to the municipality within 30 days of impounding their car, a settlement will be offered, including payment of only 50 per cent of the fine."
However, the fine will double for recurrent offenders, and daily impounding fees will apply, depending on the type of vehicle, and the area from which the vehicle had been removed.
