Both firefighters and police worked together to put out the fire; four workers were injured.
One worker was killed and four suffocated as a fire broke out at a perfume warehouse in Ajman's Al Jarf industrial area late night on Saturday. A top official said they were alerted about the blaze at 11pm.
"Rescue units and firefighter teams were dispatched immediately and reached the site within 10 minutes," Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director-general of the Ajman Civil Defence, told Khaleej Times.
"The team managed to rescue three workers who were stranded inside the warehouse. An Egyptian and four African workers were rushed to the hospital, where the Egyptian died some time later.
"Firefighters managed to control the fire in less than 30 minutes with the support of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa), which supplied water. The Ajman Police helped in cordoning off the area," he added.
The cooling operations continued on Sunday and the site was handed over to fire experts of the forensic department of the Ajman Police to determine the cause.
Lt-Col Jamal Hassan, deputy officer of the Ajman Civil Defence, said the quick response to the accident contributed in preventing the fire from spreading to surrounding areas. "We will continue to carry out surprise inspections targeting warehouses that store flammable substances and ensure they are adhering to the fire safety regulations of the emirate. Erring companies will be fined and given a grace period to rectify their mistakes," he said.
He urged warehouse owners to keep emergency exits clear of objects as they hinder the work of firefighters during emergencies. "The owners must also ensure that they comply with fire safety and protection procedures and proper installation of electrical connections," he added.
